If you have been missing the Maruti Gypsy of late, Maruti Suzuki, India’s leading car manufacturer, is coming up with a completely refurbished variant of that soon. It is called the Jimny, a compacty SUV that has taken the low end SUV market of the world by storm. So far, what was available was the 3-door Jimny. Now, tailored for India’s needs, Maruti Suzuki is  launching a 5-door variant.

While the 3-door Jimny is still in the waiting period, the company has confirmed the 5-door Jimny launch too. The company unveiled the Jimny concept at the 2020 Auto Expo.

Quite like its 3-door sibling, the Jimny 5-door will also come powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. It is expected to deliver a power output of 103 HP and 138 Nm of torque. The 3-door variant is more popular in other countries, and the company is possibly positioning this manufacturing FOR export from India. The main target of the 5-door variant is likely to be the home market and in some other parts of Asia.

The India launch date of the 5-door variant is July this year, as per reports. This has been locally developed and has been given a code name YWD.

The car comes under the off-road category and will be in direct competition with Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha and Ford EcoSport. The last will be an easy one, because, despite the huge credibility enjoyed by the EcoSport, Ford itself has ceased manufacturing in India. While that is a loss for Ford lovers – and there are many – it will be a benefit for the other two in the market.

The Jimny 5-door will be sold through NEXA dealers.

Similarities between the Jimny and the Gypsy are many. The Gypsy was a classic of the 1990s and a very popular car in that era. It was also widely used by the Indian ASrmy and other security orders. The engine capacity remains the same, but there are some unique design upgrades.

Interior
The Jimny comes with stylish black interiors. It is not splashy, yet handsome. As expected the controls are designed for quick and easy operation even when wearing gloves.

Design
Four Ss will describe this: straight, simple, straightforward and sensible. There is minimal use of colour that can distract you – remember, this is meant to be an off-roader, and the expected terrain will not be the one you generally drive to office or to the mall on. Hence, everything has been kept, simple. A lot of thought has gone into designing that. Yet, it is attractive, in its own way.

The front fascia of the rendered Maruti Jimny looks more rugged than its 3-door version. The SUV carries a black bodyguard on the radiator grille and the round fog lamps have been replaced with sleek stripes. The vehicle also gets a revised bonnet. The 5-door Jimny will be based on a longer wheelbase than the 3-door model and have more cabin space to offer. The bigger Jimny has a C-pillar along with revised rear bumper and tail lamps. The tailgate-mounted spare wheel has also been removed.

From the Inside, The new Jimny’s cabin is way more modern and feature-loaded than the previous model. It gets an all-black interior scheme with modern features like a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Performance
Let us put one thing straight. The Jimny is meant for serious off-road experiences. Built on a robust ladder frame, it has three ample body angles, 3-link rigid axle suspensions with coil springs and 4WD with a low-range transfer gear. The 1.5 litre engine takes you wherever you want to go with unrivalled agility and powerful torque when you need it most.

There are full-width rigid axles in both the front and rear, which help the Jimny ensure superior grip on diverse surfaces. When an obstacle pushes one wheel up, the axle presses the other wheel down to increase tyre contact in rough road conditions.

The engine
The 1.5L engine generates strong torque throughout a wide rpm range for powerful off-road performance. Small and lightweight, it also delivers high fuel efficiency.

Brake LSD Traction Control
If two wheels diagonal from each other lose grip while you’re travelling over slippery surfaces, this feature is designed to automatically brake the slipping wheels and redistribute torque to the other two wheels, allowing the Jimny to make its escape.

SAFETY
If the vehicle is “wandering” due to your drowsiness or fatigue, this system is designed to issue audio and visual warnings to keep you alert.

Lane Departure Warning: The Jimny helps you stay on track. Should you unintentionally stray from your lane while driving at high speed, this feature is designed to vibrate the steering wheel and issue a visual warning to encourage safer driving.

Traffic sign recognition: When the system detects traffic signs such as speed limit and no passing signs, it shows them on the meter display to help you remember which road signs the car has passed.

Transmission
Transmission options consist of a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The car also gets Suzuki AllGrip part-time AWD system with a low-ratio transfer case.
