The National Youth Day is celebrated in India on January 12 every year, which is the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, one of the country’s most influential spiritual leaders.

The Government of India declared January 12 as National Youth Day in 1984.

The theme of National Youth Day 2023 is ‘Viksit Yuva Viksit Bharat’. The theme clearly emphasizes the importance of building a progressive youth population that will eventually hold the baton of success for India in the future.

Born as Narendranath Datta in a Bengali family in Calcutta, Swami Vivekananda was inspired by his father’s (an attorney at Calcutta High Court) rational thinking and mother’s (a devout housewife) religious temperament since his childhood. They combined shaped his personality and thinking since his childhood. He graduated from Scottish Church College in 1984.

Meanwhile, he met Ramakrishna and became his disciple which eventually changed his life forever. By 1988, he became Parivrâjaka the Hindu religious life of a wandering monk. Later he delivered various lectures on Indian philosophy and Hinduism in the West. His Chicago Speech is one of the most popular as he began his speech as, “ Sisters and Brothers of America.

The Centre said the festival is held to provide exposure to youths at a national level and this year’s theme for the four-day programme is “Viksit Yuva – Viksit Bharat (Developed Youth – Developed India)”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the National Youth Festival in Karnataka’s Hubli-Dharwad today.
