57 per cent turnout was recorded on Monday in 54 assembly seats, including in Varanasi, in the seventh and last phase of Uttar Pradesh polls, marking the end of the voting process spread over two months in the crucial state.

The state has seen a decrease in voter turnout in the last three phases. In the previous six phases, the state recorded a turnout of 62.43 percent, 64.42 percent, 62.28 percent, 61.52 percent, 57.32 percent and 55.79 percent. The state had recorded 61.24 percent polling in the 2017 assembly elections.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi – the BJP candidate here is Ravindra Jaiswal in the north – recorded 54.12%, but the highest was at Sonbhadra, which recorded 61%% voting.

Chandauli recorded 60.5% and Azamgarh 53.12%.

The rest were as follows: Jaunpur 54.22%, Ghazipur 53.95%, Mirzapur 56%, Bhadohi 56.12% andMau: 59%.

In this final phase as many as 2.06 crore eligible voters will decide the fate of 613 candidates contesting for 54 seats.

One of the most-watched candidates in this phase is former minister Om Prakash Rajbhar, who is contesting from the Zahoorabad seat. Rajbhar had won the seat in 2017 as a candidate of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, which was a BJP ally.

In 2017, BJP along with its allies Apna Dal and SBSP made their inroads by winning 29 seats, but this time SBSP has gone with Akhilesh. In the last election, BSP got six seats and Samajwadi Party got 11 seats.

Whatever the polling pitch, the start to the Uttar Pradesh polls the first phase, in the western part of the state was tepid. Not only that, the polling percentage was a good 3% percentage lower than what it was in the 2017 polls.

In the first phase a voter turnout of 60.17% was registered. This was over three percentage points lower than what was recorded (63.45%) for the same 58 seats in the 2017 Assembly election. Other than Gautam Buddha nagar, where there was a minor addition to the voting percentage, there was less interest in voting overall in these 58 seats.

As per the Election Commission, Shamli recorded the highest average turnout of 69.42% in 2017 65.48%; Muzaffarnagar recorded 65.34% in 2017 67.0%; Meerut 60.91% in 2017 65.12%; Baghpat 61.35% in 2017 64.25%; Ghaziabad 54.77% in 2017 58.6%; Hapur 60.50% in 2017 was 66.15%; Gautam Buddha Nagar 56.73% in 2017 56.4%; Bulandshahr 60.52% in 2017 64.47%; Aligarh 60.49% in 2017 66.48%; Mathura 63.28% in 2017 64.5%;  Agra 60.33% in 2017 63.2%.

Of the 58 seats going to the polls, the BJP won 53 in the 2017 assembly elections. In the phase 1 seats, the BJP secured 46% (53 seats) votes, followed by the BSP 22.5% (2 seats) votes, the SP 14.3% (2 seats) votes and the RLD secure 7.1% (1 seat) votes.

Voting was brisk as the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh polls started on Thursday. By 11am, polling stations across western UP 58 seats are up for grabs in this phase there has been a 20.03% voter turnout.

Agra has recorded 20.30 per cent polling, Aligarh 17.91 per cent, Baghpat 22.30 per cent, Bulandshahr 21.62 per cent, Gautam Buddh Nagar 19.23 per cent, Ghaziabad 18.24 per cent, Hapur 22.80 per cent, Mathura 20.73 per cent, Meerut 18.54 per cent, Muzaffarnagar 22.65 per cent and Shamli 22.83 per cent.

Uttar Pradesh is all set to decide the fate of several BJP heavyweights in its first Assembly election after Covid-19.

Polling has begun in 58 seats spread across 11 districts of Western UP.

Polling started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm, officials of the state election commission said here. As many as 623 candidates, including 73 women are in the fray in the first phase and around 2.28 core voters, including 1.24 crore men and 1.04 crore women are eligible to cast their franchise, It is taking place at 25,849 polling stations, election officials said.
