At the climate summit in Glasgow, called Conference of the Parties (COP) \u2013 its 26th summit, hence COP26 \u2013 India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday pledged that it will achieve the target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main points of agreement of the summit were as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– India to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– India\u2019s non-fossil energy capacity target is 500 GW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– India to meet 50 per cent of its energy requirements from renewable energy by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– India will reduce the total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes from now to 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– India to reduce carbon intensity of its economy to less than 45
per cent by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
– India decides to include climate change adaptation policies in school syllabi to make the next generation aware of issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PM Modi said<\/strong>: \u201cWe have to make adaptation the main part of our development policies and schemes. In India, schemes like \u2018Nal Se Jal\u2019, Clean India Mission & Ujjawala have not only given adoption benefits to our citizens but also improved their quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said<\/strong>: \u201cOur addiction to fossil fuels is pushing humanity to the brink. We face a stark choice: Either we stop it – or it stops us. It\u2019s time to say: enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n US President Joe Biden said<\/strong>: \u201cWe want to do more to help developing countries accelerate the clean energy transition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said<\/strong>: \u201cThe world is strapped to a \u2018doomsday device.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Chinese President Xi Jinping<\/strong>, who is not attending in person, sent a message, urging developed countries to not only do more but also support developing nations to do better on climate change.
