American legend Serena Williams, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles, announced her retirement from tennis on Tuesday, saying she is “evolving away” from the sport.

The 40-year-old tennis star said that the best word to describe what she is up to is “evolution” and that she wants to grow her family.

The world first came to know Serena Williams as a 17-year-old with beaded braids, overwhelming power and precocious intelligence and poise when she stunned her sport by winning the first of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles at the 1999 U.S. Open.

She has been ranked world number one by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks.

She also finished as the year-end number one five times.

Serena has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the open era, and the second-most of all time, only behind Margaret Court’s 24.

Kalaiselvi is first ever woman director general of CSIR
Nallathamby Kalaiselvi has become the first ever woman director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), which has brought about several cutting-edge innovations in the field of research and development in science and tech fields. Viswanathan Anand becomes FIDE deputy president
From being one of the finest players in the world, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is now set to embark on his new role as Fide vice-president after Arkady Dvorkovich was re-elected as president for a second term. In the elections held in Chennai, Dvorkovich pipped Andrii Baryshpolets, a Ukrainian Grandmaster, by a landslide scoreline of 157-16 votes. A third candidate, French Bachar Kouatly, withdrew his candidature after giving his speech, before voting began.

Moments after the results came out, Anand tweeted: “For me, chess is a part of who I am. As a chess player, I have been fortunate to see the game transform from a niche game to a mass sport. I’m now happy to be part of the Dvorkovich team as we try to continue to make that positive change.”

Ex-Andhra Bank CEO Suresh Patel is new central vigilance commissioner
Former Andhra Bank CEO and incumbent vigilance commissioner Suresh N Patel has been appointed as the new chief of the Central Vigilance Commission. Former Intelligence Bureau director Arvind Kumar was appointed as a vigilance commissioner along with ex-IAS officer Praveen Kumar Srivastava.

The post of the central vigilance commissioner (CVC) had remained vacant for a year during which Patel had been working as the acting CVC since June this year.

Patel was sworn in as the chief of the anti-corruption watchdog by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. “At a ceremony held today at 10.00 hrs at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Suresh N Patel, was sworn in as the Central Vigilance Commissioner. He made and subscribed the oath of office before the President,” a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 4 said.

Aarya Walvekar from Virginia crowned Miss India USA
Indian American Aarya Walvekar, an 18-year-old girl from Virginia, has been crowned Miss India USA 2022 at an annual beauty pageant held in New Jersey recently. In a post on Instagram after her achievement, Aarya wrote that the feeling she is experiencing now is ‘indescribable’.

Aarya Walvekar is a senior at Briar Woods High School in Virginia. She is an advocate for mental health and body positivity health at Every Size Movement, according to TEDxYouth Briar Woods. The 18-year-old has been a TedX speaker. She spoke at the event on “Rethinking ‘Healthy’”. In her downtime, Aarya loves to do yoga, cook for her friends and family, and spend time with her younger sister.

Contestants representing 30 US states participated in three different pageants – Miss India USA, Mrs India USA and Miss Teen India USA. Akshi Jain from Washington was crowned Mrs India USA and Tanvi Grover from New York won the Miss Teen India USA title.

Vinisha  Umashankar, a student innovator, was selected as India’s baton bearer at the 16th official Queen’s Baton relay (held from January 12 to 15). The 15-year-old is a student innovator turned environmentalist from Tiruvannamalai district in Tamil Nadu.

Vinisha had inspired the world with her solar ironing cart, which uses solar panels to power a steam iron box. She won the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award instituted by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF) India for her invention. NIF is an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology under the central government.

She has been selected as a change maker. The baton relay is scheduled to conclude on July 28, 2022 at the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. It will travel across 72 Commonwealth nations and territories for 294 days. India is the 27th nation en route to Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Birju Maharaj, India’s kathak legend, dies at 83

Maharaj was an icon of Indian classical dance. He was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

Oil  Kathak legend Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away at his home in Delhi late on January 23 after suffering a heart attack. He was 83. Maharaj was an icon of Indian classical dance. He was a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

Maharaj was suffering from a kidney ailment and was undergoing dialysis and likely died of cardiac arrest. Ragini Maharaj, her granddaughter, said: “He was under treatment for the past month. He had sudden breathlessness at around 12:15-12:30 am last night; we brought him to the hospital within 10 minutes, but he passed away.”

Reports say that Birju Maharaj was playing with his grandsons late on Sunday night when his health deteriorated and he became unconscious. He was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

He was born into a family of renowned Kathak dancers and trained under his uncles and father, Acchan Maharaj, before giving his first performance at age 7.

Maya Angelou becomes the first woman of colour to appear on US coin

Poet and activist Maya Angelou, who died in 2014, has become the first Black woman to be featured on a United States quarter coin. The 25-cent coin, which shows Angelou with outstretched arms, went into circulation recently. Mint Deputy Director Ventris Gibson said: “It is my honour to present our nation’s first circulating coins dedicated to celebrating American women and their contributions to American history.”

Angelou was born in Missouri in 1928 and became an essayist and poet who worked with Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1969, she published her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and later read her poem On the Pulse of Morning at Bill Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.

In 2010, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Barack Obama.
