On November 25, 1960, three sisters, Patria Mercedes Mirabal, María Argentina Minerva Mirabal and Antonia María Teresa Mirabal, were assassinated in the Dominican Republic on the orders of the Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo. The Mirabel sisters fought hard to end Trujillo’s dictatorship. Activists on women’s rights have observed a day against violence on the anniversary of the deaths of these three women since 1981. November 25 was designated as the ‘International day for the elimination of violence against women’ by the UN General Assembly.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), on 17 November 2015, declared that International Day for Universal Access to Information will be observed on September 28, every year. Several organizations and governmental bodies adhered to the declaration by UNESCO. Further, the UN General Assembly also decided to declare September 28 as the International Day for Universal Access of Information (IDUAI).

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.

Yoga can be an important instrument in the collective quest of humanity for promoting sustainable lifestyle in harmony with planet Earth. In keeping with this spirit, the theme for this year’s Yoga Day celebrations is “Yoga for Humanity.”

Yoga originated thousands of years ago, even before belief systems were born. The word Yoga was also mentioned in ancient literature like the Rig Veda. The idea of International Yoga Day was conceived by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who proposed the concept on September 27, 2014, during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

In 1982, the world got appalled by the news of a huge number of innocent Lebanese and Palestinian children becoming the victims of Israeli aggression during the Lebanese Civil War. Members of the UN General Assembly called for an emergency session to discuss the matter on 19 August. It decided to mark 4 June as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression under the ES-⅞ resolution. Since then, the world marks the day annually on 4 June.

The UN General Assembly, on 8 December 2005 declared that each year on April 4 would be officially proclaimed and observed as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It was first observed on April 4, 2006. The continued efforts by states, assistance with the UN and relevant organisations, to help establish and develop national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosives war remnants constitute a serious threat to the safety, health and lives of people or hinders social and economic development at national and local levels.

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action 2022 theme is “United Nations Promotes SDGs – Safe Ground – Safe Home”.

For 20 years United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has been working and solving the problems of the affected people and the threat of explosive hazards faced by civilians, peacekeepers and humanitarians. Basically, they protect civilians, support refugees, enable recovery activities, advocate human rights law etc.
