Today is International Olympic Day

0

International Olympic Day or World Olympic Day is observed every year on June 23 and it’s a celebration of sport, health, and being together. The day provides a moment for everyone to gather and get active with purpose.

The theme this year is ‘Together, For a Peaceful World’, which will be accompanied by the social media hashtags #MoveForPeace and #OlympicDay.

The basic aim of the day is to encourage the participation of everyone, regardless of caste creed or gender, to participate in physical exercise and sports. In a way, the day is dedicated to the countless sportsmen and athletes from around the world who have made a name for themselves. Many of them have done their country proud by representing their nation in the sport they excel in and people look up to them and idolize them.

The idea of celebrating an Olympic Day was adopted at the 42nd IOC Session in St Moritz. It was in 1948 that doctor Gruss, a Czech IOC member, presented the idea of a world Olympic day at the 41st Session of the International Olympic Committee in Stockholm, Sweden. The purpose was to celebrate the idea of the Olympic Movement.

Maharashtra crisis: Claims of number of rebel MLAs vasy

Maha rebel Eknath Shinde seen with MLAs at luxury Surat hotel

A bunch of rebel Shiv Sainiks (that’s what the MLAs are calling themselves) have reached Guwahati, a BJP ruled state’s bastion, and quite surprisingly, their numbers it is claimed, is growing by the minute. Not too many flights to that city from Mumbai, one may recollect. Meanwhile, one brave Sainik, Kailash Patel, is said to have gotten down from the car he was being ‘kidnapped’ in the dark and had walked and hitched hiked back to the Shiv Sena head office.

The breakaways are real, but how far these stories are one cannot confirm. Meanwhile, dissident Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde led his men to Guwahati today (June 22) and to a luxury hotel on the outskirts of the city amid tight security and in three Assam State Transport Corporation buses.

The MLAs were received at the airport by BJP MPs Pallab Lochan Das and Sushanta Borgohain Shinde. Shinde claims the support of 40 MLAs – 33 Shiv Sena and seven independents – while the picture shared by the Shinde camp has only 35 MLAs. Where did the other five come from?

Looking back, the political crisis in the state began a day after the MLC elections, when some MVA MLAs cross-voted in the favour of BJP.

The Shiv Sena, which heads the MVA government, has 55 MLAs, followed by allies NCP (53) and the Congress (44) in the 288-member Maharashtra assembly where the current simple majority mark is 144.

The Shiv Sena had walked out of a pre-poll alliance with the BJP after the 2019 assembly elections to form the government with Sharad Pawar’s NCP and the Congress following differences with the BJP on the chief minister’s post. There was unease in a section of the Shiv Sena over the growing stature of Aditya Thackeray, Uddhav’s son and minister, in party affairs.

Presidential polls: NDA brings out a tribal trump card

0

Immediately following the joint opposition Presidential candidate announcement – Yashwant Sinha – the NDA brought a surprise candidate to the forefront. Their candidate, former Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu, is a tribal leader from Odisha.

This was announced by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Tuesday (June 21). The selection of a woman and a tribal to boot tips the balance somewhat to the NDA, which is short of a majority by just 1.2 per cent of the votes in the electoral college. Considering the changes in Maharashtra at this point of time, this shortfall could easily be overcome.

Murmu, hailing from Odisha, ensures the votes there. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s BJD, Odisha’s ruling party, has 3 percent of the votes. The very fact that the Presidential candidate is from Odisha and that she can become the first tribal President and the second woman in the post assures votes from all tribal leaders, the NDA thinks.

At the same time, though Sinha is a seasoned politician, a former Union cabinet minister and has been critical of all moves by the BJP ever since he quit the party. Logically, he is a good fit for the post, but in Indian politics, emotions play a major role, even if it is the Presidential election.

However, who is Murmu?
Born on June 20, 1958, Murmu is from Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district and comes from a tribal community (Santhal). She has served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021, but is also a seasoned hand in politics, though starting out as a teacher (where she taught schools without a salary for a long time) before she waded into Odisha politics.

She was elected twice as MLA on a BJP ticket from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj (2000 and 2009). She has held several key positions within the party throughout her political career.

Murmu was also a national executive member of the BJP’s ST Morcha from 2013 to 2015.

Droupadi Murmu was awarded the Neelkanth Award for the best MLA of the year by the Odisha Legislative Assembly in the year 2007. He has experience in handling ministries like Transport, Commerce, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry in the Government of Odisha.

She started off her political career by winning as a councillor and becoming the vice-chairperson of Rairangpur, Odisha, in 1997. The same year, she was elected the state vice-president of the BJP’s ST Morcha.

Early in life she struggled with poverty in one of the most remote and underdeveloped districts of the country. Against all odds, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar and she served as junior assistant in Irrigation and Power Department between 1979 and 1983.

Later, she also served as an honorary assistant teacher in the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur.

Today is World Rainforest Day

0

World Rainforest Day is celebrated annually on 22 June to honour and promote the world’s rainforests. Rainforests are a source of many resources like fresh water and clean air as they absorb harmful gases including carbon dioxide, thus playing an important role in maintaining a climate balance.

The theme for this year is ‘The Time is Now’. here are a number of initiatives that drive the impact rainforests require. The summit will focus on solutions that are being considered and implemented. Since we are already aware of what needs to be done, the day will focus on the action that needs to be taken.

World Rainforest Day was marked for the first time on 22 June 2017. The Rainforest Partnership had started the initiative with an aim to preserve the tropical rainforests. The agenda behind the initiative was to protect the world’s rainforests that are an integral part of the ecosystem.

Yashwant Sinha is the common Opposition Presidential candidate

0

Finally, the Opposition has a found a joint Presidential candidate. Yashwant Sinha, former BJP cabinet minister and now an ardent critic of the party is the man. Having resigned from all party posts of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) – he was vice-president of the party – which were hurdles in the way of being a neutral candidate as other opposition parties had demanded, he appealed to all parties and the parties agreed.

Sinha, therefore, is the candidate for the opposition. The BJP has yet to name any candidate for the elections, neither have they said if they are willing to go with Ram Nath Kovind for a second term.

The opposition may have heaved a sigh of relief, after their three initial choice of candidates – Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah and former Bengal governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi refused to be candidates.

Announcing his resignation from the party post, Sinha tweeted: “I am grateful to Mamata ji for the honour and prestige she bestowed on me in the TMC. Now a time has come when for a larger national cause I must step aside from the party to work for greater Opposition unity. I am sure she approves of the step.”

Yesterday (June 20) TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had proposed Sinha’s name as the joint opposition candidate for the post of president.
